Ch 9 Race & ethnicity

After reading chapter 9 Race & Ethnicity and watching the video Race"The power of illuision I now get a better understanding of the two. Race refers to a person's physical apperance such as skin color, eye color, hair etc. Ethnicity on the other hand relates to cultural factors such as nationality, culture ancestry language and beliefs. Race defines each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics. After watching the video I realize Race Can't exactly tell you where somebody is from, what a person is naturally good at or how they might behave. But it can tell you who is being discriminated against and who lack certain opportunities. Race is more of a social construct than a biological one. Scientificically there is only one race and that is the huma race,so to put races into different caterogy doesnt exist. Its sad but as blacsk we are label not that smart but good in sports, while Asian are the smarter race and the white are richer then all.  Something I always found weird about this world we live in how when filling out a appiclication they want to know your race. I never understood why do they want to know whats your nationally is. Is that deternmining the outcome for a job.

  1. I definitely agree with you! There is only one race and it is the human race! What is the reasonable and practical need to categorize people according to their skin color, hair color, and so on? Who has created or defined that? What is the purpose of all of that? "Race" is socially constructed based on human interaction and its meaning has the purpose to categorize humans in a hierarchy. The interesting aspect of it is that those who are at the top of the hierarchy are the ones who created it!

  2. Yes , I would definitely have to agree with your statement on race "Race Can't exactly tell you where somebody is from, what a person is naturally good at or how they might behave. But it can tell you who is being discriminated against and who lack certain opportunities. Race is more of a social construct than a biological one" because it's basically saying you really can't judge a book by it's cover . because you never know what a person has to offer or how much they are capably of surprising you. But on the other hand our racial cultural backgrounds do provide us with different experiences and norms that another friend of a different race may not even know about or even have experienced.
