Socialization

After reading both articles and watching both videos I see how they all can relate to socialization one way or another.  The video, "A Call to Men" by Tony Porter was a very interesting speech. He talked about how men are being held at a different standard when being compare to a women. He speaks on how boys growing up they are taught to be tough, strong, courageous, show no pain ,no emotion with the exception of anger and definitely no fear. Growing up boys are taught at a young age that their superior over females. Tony Porter gave an example of how he treats his two kids differently letting his daughter cry but when his son cries he is quick to be hard on him because growing up as a boy part of the "men box" you cant show weakness. This video really shows me how important it is to have a father and how important it is as a father to raise his son the right way and not the way society tells you to.
What I also found very intersting was the "man box". The man box, are a bunch of rules men are suppose to follow which will show them the dos and donts of life. The problem is that since our society stresses so much over these past generation rules we're not really rasing our sons correctly. We have to break out of the man box go against the traditional images of manhood that stop us from taking a stand on how we bring up our sons

The second video "Killing me softly" Jean Kilbourne spoke about adverstiments and how women are being portrayed in a negative way because of them. Ads have always played a big role in society. They show us who we are and what we should be and most importantly how we should look. This could be very hard growing up for some girls because if your not taught that your beauitful any size, shape or color you're going to go through life trying to fit in and when you see that your never fitting in to what society portrays you to be you can become very depressed. Trying to keep up with what the ads call beautiful is truly alot of time ,energy and money.

The article retro wife is about about a successful career woman whom ends up deciding to leave it all to be a stay at home mother. I believe from young a girl growing up she is taught she must be the caregiver in the family. I always found it weird that on Christmas some parents will give their 2 year old daughter a baby doll and call it her baby.Right there we are taught that little girls are suppose to grow up one day and be mothers.

In the article Parent Socialization of Children by Terri Heath, The author explains how parents around the world raise their children. It also shows how the parenting styles are so different but very similar at the same time. Terri Heath points out that there are three type of parenting skills; authoritive permissive and authoritarain. The authoritive parent are the more hands on parents, lets their child grow independence, strict but not to strict to where they push their children away. The permissivie parents are usually the push overs let their children get away with anything.Their children usually turn out to be lazy and commonly do not have self control. The authoritarian parents are the strict military parents.Usually their children grow up angry and anti social. This article also points out how depending on the parents academic achievements predict how they raise their children will determine the outcome of their children's success.

POWER!!

What comes to mind when I think of the word POWER is authority and how the person with that power can either do something uplifting for our society or something negative. Either way it can be an big impact on society. The definition of power is having the ability to bring about an intended outcome even when opposed by others. In Ch.5 "Experience Sociology", "Five Faces Of Oppression" and  The Milgram Experiment they all touch base on how we examine power and its various characteristics and how power can shape our daily lives. While I do agree that the amount of power that we have can heavily influences what we accomplish in life, I do not approve of how people with power take advantage of the people under them.
In life in the United States having a lot of money leads to having a lot of power. As stated in the chapter"people with more resource typically have more power and those with power can use it to obtain more resources". Which I do believe that the more money you have the more privilege you are in life. Having money you can influences those with no money to do things for you even if it's against their morals. I'm a big fan of reality television, as I think about the power people have I thought about Kim Kardashian and if it wasn't for her father who was an famous attorney the name Kardashian would not be where it is now.She use her father resources to start her own fame which led to her sex tapes degrading herself for more money and after the sex tape her family was hitch their own reality t.v show which is now worth millions.
On the other hand I do not agree with authority taking advantage of their power. As I learned our government in my opinion been taking advantage of us since the Declaration of Independence was signed. In the article"Five Faces of Oppression" by Iris Young he notes that"no matter which  definition you use, oppression is when people reduce the potential for other people to be fully human". In other words anything that's doesn't give people a choice to choose if they want to do something or not is dehumanizing them. The Constitution gave us laws we have to follow and if we didn't follow them rules we had to face certain consequences. During slavery was truly a hard time for African Americans since they were exploited by working 20hrs shifts and during that time they were rewarded with food that they barely were getting. They also was very powerlessness in that the blacks had no say so they couldn't learn to read or write.
Going back to the video The Milgram Experienment Stanley Milgram did a study on obedience to society and how under what conditions would a person obey authority when going against their conscience. In this generation we have more of choice to do what we think is right and wrong in our life. During the video it showed how the people playing the teacher continue to shock the learner because the authority being the scientist told them to. This shows that following and listening to the authority is not always the right thing to do. Stanley Milgram also said something that stood out to me which was" offer it is not so much the kind of person a man is the kind of situation determined how he would act".
Power is always something good to have. Its just what you do what that power that makes you a leader in this world. Having to much power can be very harmful if its in the wrong person hand.
