Ch 9 Race & ethnicity

After reading chapter 9 Race & Ethnicity and watching the video Race"The power of illuision I now get a better understanding of the two. Race refers to a person's physical apperance such as skin color, eye color, hair etc. Ethnicity on the other hand relates to cultural factors such as nationality, culture ancestry language and beliefs. Race defines each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics. After watching the video I realize Race Can't exactly tell you where somebody is from, what a person is naturally good at or how they might behave. But it can tell you who is being discriminated against and who lack certain opportunities. Race is more of a social construct than a biological one. Scientificically there is only one race and that is the huma race,so to put races into different caterogy doesnt exist. Its sad but as blacsk we are label not that smart but good in sports, while Asian are the smarter race and the white are richer then all.  Something I always found weird about this world we live in how when filling out a appiclication they want to know your race. I never understood why do they want to know whats your nationally is. Is that deternmining the outcome for a job.

Ch 10 Gender and Sex

The chapter Gender and Sexuality touch base on the inequalities ties to them two. At birth we are learn our sex and that is what seperates males to females.I chose to read the article "Boyhood, Organized Sports, and the Construction of Masculinities" by Michael A. Messner and he say how masculinities is taught not something you can be born with. This brings me to the social umbrella of our society, there’s the masculine role and the feminine role which is always portrayed as either the masculine man or the feminine female and if anyone doesn’t fit in with the social priority, their considered to be different and weird. When a boy has feminine ways or tendencies, he’s considered gay or just not manly but when a female goes out of her “social priora” she considered to be innovator and a female that his making a name for of female kind, although some women look down on them for leaving their mothering, caring and feminist ways behind.

Throughout my life I’ve seen people take flack from pushing the modern norm. Larger than life stars that wasn’t afraid of being different, from one of the most popular pop stars, Mr. Androgynous himself, prince to one of the most dangerous and powerful women ever to wrestle professionally, china, they have be attacked and bullied because they were different and considered to be gay or distressful. We as a society have gotten so use to the norm that we shame the male nurse or the female firefight. Growing up I never wanted to be that outcast so I got into the sports world, playing basketball and football so I could be considered to be a man while my sisters played jump rope and with played with make-up and dolls that where the stigma came in. I was frowned apond when one day I decided to stay in and play dolls with my sister I remember this day like it was yesterday my father snatch the doll out my hand and slap me upside the head and told me "boys dont play with barbie and said hes not rasing no gay son".

Class Inequality

After watching the video "People Like Us:Social Class in America" I really see how the wealthy look at the middle class and the poor people. My feeling kinda got hurt in a way because at one point in the video one man actually said theres no way to move up in class but according to the America dream everyone has a chance of moving up but thats not exactly true, yes you could get more money but would you get accepted by the rich is what make you a part of their class . In America they state its against the America people norms to speak or belong to a certain class but even if its against we all still belong to a class. Class in my opinion is just people opinions. I can't understand how you can look at a man clothing and deterimined his class. Class is manily base on looks, popularity, money and the size house you live in. There are all kind of measure of class in America. America is divided by class. As we move from life we seperate ourself from that people that we feel don't belong to our class. One of the speaker Joe Queenan said something very interested to me he said "A generation ago people will send their kids to private school because they didn't like black people now it they dont like poor people Its all about class. That statement alone shows how class played such a big part in society since day 1.  I dont think people should have that right to look down on anybody because their not from the same class. In America the rich does rule, In society the upper rich is like still being in high school because you want to belong you want to be accepted.

In the article"Media Magic: Making Class Invisble by Gregory Mantsios he touch base on the influence the media on social class. Mantsios first speaks about the poor and how the media portrays the poor and how they do not exist, their underserving , and only have to blame themselves for their problems. When hes wrote about the wealthy he talks about how as a class the wealthy are generous yes there some wealthy people who are bad but its only a few. My opinion on this article is the media is so full of it I cant take it serious. I feel the media only informs Americans on what they want us to know not what we need to know.

My Deviance Ways

Deviance is defined as behavior that does not conform to basic cultural norms and expectations. What is ultimately defined as deviance depends on the social norms at the time.In life we do deviance things everyday but since we feel if were not committing crimes or doing anything illegal its okay. As I sit and think about all my deviance ways I find it funny that I really do things that someone else would consider disgusting or just not the social norm.

1) Growing Up i always picked my nose.Yes i know its disgusting but its just something I've done. Ill be driving I'll start pick my nose, I could be doing laundry I'll pick my nose I don't know I just always feel like there a booger or a itch Now that I'm 22 I don't do it as much as i did when i was in high school. My family and friends always get on me for it calling me dirty or nasty. One day I could remember i think this was the reason I started to have consideration and not just dig up my nose in public. I was on the train and I just was going to town in my nose and these two girls that was sitting across from me literally was looking at me rolled their eyes in disgust and got up and move. I felt so disgusted with myself not knowing that this is a trait that's in my family. My grandmother always tell me stories about how my grandfather would be in  the bar just digging in his nose. After that day with them girls it made me realize that what I'm doing wasn't wrong its just a time and place for everything.

2) Monday my little sister just gave birth to my beautiful niece. Me and my sister have a really close relationship that if you don't know us you would think its like incest but its not that at all. I'm saying this story because I don't know if its deviance but I believe it is because its against the norm. While my sister was giving birth she wanting me to be in the room. Every time the nurse or the doctor would come in the room  they would say to her well do you want your brother to leave while we check you and she would say No and they would be like I don't know no brother that would want to see this The doctor went as far as to say we was making her uncomfortable . Another thing that happen she was telling her baby-fathers mother that I was in the room when she gave birth and she started being funny saying "Ew' you saw your sister private part" but saying it in a mock kinda way.

3)This weekend I travel to Virginia and on the way down there the Chinese bus I was on kept pulling over because some black people in the back deciding they couldn't wait to get off the bus they needed to smoke they weed right on the bus. I just found that to be very disrespectful they didn't care about nobody on that bus but themselves. The bus driver had to threaten to call the police and they made us get their a hour later then we was suppose. A lot of people was upset but not one person said anything to them.

4) Just recently I just told my grandmother I didn't want to have kids of my own. She told me I was being selfish and going against OUR family rules (what ever that is) and If i don't get my life back on track I'm going to hell...I'll let you guys sit and think of why she said that

5) I have a potty mouth. I know its something I truly have to work on but I use profanity a lot. Not something I'm proud of. In a way I feel it because of where I was raise

After reading the article "Positive Functions of the Underserving Poor: Uses of the Underclass in America by Herbert J. Gans really open my eyes to the world we live in and the importance the poor people have. I didn't know poverty had so many different effect on our lives. He speaks about how the displacement function is how the poor are being blamed for social problems that they did not actually cause. Those who are part of the lower class actually contribute to our society just as much as the working and the upper class do.This idea for sure may impact many people, because a really large number of our population believe that the poor people are just receiving services that cost a lot of money without deserving them, which is obviously not true. The unfortunates are blame for most of the crimes and unacceptable behaviors that occurred in our society just because of the stereotypes they supposedly into. Even for those label the poor people, they used them as a motivation for not being like them but also its one of the ways in which they protect themselves from being point out as well. Everyone in our society have an essential role.
